Cherry Blossoms in Washington DC

Each spring, cherry blossom trees along the Tidal Basin pop into a beautiful display of white and pink blossoms. The trees are a gift from Japan in 1912 and the main trees are Yoshino Cherry trees. The National Park Service in Washington DC monitors the trees and reports their bloom progress up to the peak bloom. Peak bloom is a single date, however the best displays are two days before through two days after peak bloom. After reaching peak bloom, the blossoms last 3 to 7 days depending on weather conditions. For more information on the DC Cherry blossoms, visit this site. Cherry blossom bloom draws large crowds, making it one of the busiest times in Washington DC.

I stayed at the Willard Intercontinental hotel, near the White House. This hotel goes back to the 1850s, and every president since 1853 has stayed at the hotel. The hotel often hosts elegant dinners, political events, and meetings.

The best cherry blossom displays are around the Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, and Franklin D. Roosevelt memorials. The Tidal Basin is a large area, and the memorials along the basin are 15-20 walk from the nearest metro station. Fastest way to experience the cherry blossoms is a bike or Segway tour. I did the Segway tour which is a fun way to see the blossoms.

As beautiful as the cherry blossoms are during the day, they are worth seeing at night. The Tidal Basin is quite dark at night, with little lighting, but the blossoms stand out well.

In addition to Tidal Basin, some cherry blossoms can also be found near the US Capital.
