Alaska: Denali

Train Ride: Anchorage to Denali

On the train heading north to Denali. It was a beautiful day with mostly sunny sky, rare for Alaska. Mount McKinley was completely visible. The train features comfortable seats with plenty of legroom, big windows for easy viewing of the scenery, and gourmet meals in the dining cars. While the train is not the fastest way to travel in Alaska, it is definitely the most scenic. I consider the train ride as part of the Alaska adventure. Late August and early September is fall season in Alaska, so some of the trees leaves are changing colors.

Denali National Park

I stayed at Denali Bluffs Hotel. This hotel is located on Sugarloaf Mountain, with views of the wilderness. There is a shuttle to get from the train station to the hotel.

I did an all day bus tour along Park Road, which is 92 miles long starting from the city of Denali and ending in Kantishna. Beyond mile 15 on Park Road, vehicle access is restricted to buses and park employees. The bus tour is an excellent way to take in the scenery of Denali National Park. During the tour, we spotted many wildlife including moose, mountain sheep, caribou, bears, and ptarmigan (the Alaska bird).
